If you have created beloved characters that have lasted decades upon decades; have had numerous merchandise created; they have been seen on multiple platforms from movies, games and, hell, bed sheets, then why, oh God, why, would you not try your damn darnedest to get a voice artist who could recreate the voices of said beloved characters? Betty Rubble in the original 60's incarnation goes from the inimitable Bea Benedaret to Gerry Johnson, fairly Seamlessly, not a lot of issue here. But once Gerry Johnson also past away, all things went to hell. The same is true about Fred's voice Alan Reed. As great of a voice artist as Henry Cordon was, he could never fill Reeds shoes and simply screeched Fred's baritone until his death in 2005. BUT it was tolerable. What was not tolerable were the absolute unfortunate voices that would plague Betty Rubble for the next 3 decades. Gay Hartweg, BJ Ward and Gay Autterson in no way shape or form, embody the spirit, cadence or likability of everyone's favorite hot neighbor! I'm sure these ladies are lovely, but to go from the bubbly verve of Benedaret, who helped create a "catch giggle", if you can call it that, to Gay Auttersons dour sounding molasses of a drawl, is the thing that resonates to me that few appreciated these characters enough to find the right voice. I bought a CD boxed set called Hanna-Barbera's Pic-a-Nic Basket of Cartoon Classics and in it was a CD with answering machine messages of the stars, you could use as your outgoing message. i don't know who did the voices, but you could tell it was the same guy and he machete'd each voice to pieces! I.E. when Super Snooper and Blabber mouse were talking, the guy barely switched from Snooper in time for the piece of dialogue spoken by Blabbermouse! His Snagglepuss was depressing and i got out a noose when he tried to muster Peter Potamus' voice!

Would Disney ever do this? Did they? NO! You cannot tell the difference in utterance between Mickey, Donald or Goofy from 1940 to 2008. Different actors have portrayed these voices and there are slight inflections that allow you to tell the difference between a Bill Farmer from a George Johnson, but for the most part it is seamless!

With the Deaths of Don Messick, Daws Butler and Mel Blanc, we have seen a constant deterioration in the world of making our favorite characters sound as they did in their original outings and its a travesty. Maybe i have a very discerning ear, as i listen to hear the differences between, say Kermit the Frog pre and post Jim Henson and all other classic cartoons whose voices have past on to the great sound booth in the sky. At this point, if Frank Welker and Casey Kasem die, H-B Characters are up crap creek without a paddle! So much of their appeal comes from the voices that i don't understand why its not given much more credence! I see they tried to have a different actor do Shaggy in some of those direct to DVD titles recently and the show that came out, but have gone back to Kasem for the good of all toondom. Not all is bleak, however, as the voice cast of The Flintstones On the Rocks was delightful! Tress MacNeille channeled the feisty spirit of Jean Vander Pyl perfectly and Jeff Bergman's Fred was a throwback to Alan Reed if ever i heard one. Another plus is Mindy Cohn as Velma in Scooby Doo. She is a welcome addition to newer Scooby toons and is very similar to Nicole Jaffe. But alas, Daphne's voice has been screwed up since the original episodes with Stefanianna Christopherson went off Saturday mornings. Even Heather North did a commendable job with Daffy Daphne in the early 80's. Who the hell is doing it now?

Please Warner Brothers, stop maligning our characters with terrible voice interpretations! I say this at a time when actually, i think it's getting better, but still, as you prepare (at least i hope you are preparing) new ways to reinvigorate these classic toons, do not accept mediocrity. If you need an idea, see my deviantart page for my interpretation of what i think you should do with the H-B franchise the link is below. I mean look at these great characters!

http://slappy427.deviantart.com/

Stop Maligning H-B Characters! As an avid Hanna Barbera FANatic, i have, over the years, been very critical of how H-B, and now WB have handled their characters. At the same time, i have watched Disney treat their characters with loving hands and gently mold them and shape them to fit into the next generation. As much as i defend them and admire them and love their characters, there was a sense of "throw away" that accompanied a lot of their toons, especially in arguably their most lucrative decade, the 70's. Instead of nurturing their would be stars, Dynomutt, Jabberjaw, Captain Caveman etc., they were tossed aside in order to usher in whatever new trend in society would be. Interestingly enough, they had a hand in helping creating one sociological trend with the creation of Scooby Doo and shows of that ilk.

Scooby, along with the Archie's and Sabrina, helped continue the whole teen as rock band, solving mysteries, era that children loved during this time. It was fodder for kids ages 8,9,10, 11 and 12 who wanted to watch people like their older siblings, get into scrapes and figure out how to get out of them with a little luck, ingenuity and help from some sort of anthropomorphic animal. If you look at the popular shows of the time, teens ruled the airwaves and, not coincidentally, advertisers were once again realizing the buying power of 18-24 year olds. The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family, along with various other teen-centric performers such as The Jackson Five, The Osmond's and later 8 is Enough and Family, all showcased teens in a positive and appealing light. Scooby Doo, a lasting staple in cartoon history, showcased this very appealing aspect and in effect help proliferate this sociological trend. A trend they tried hard to keep afloat in congruence with Scooby; Goober and the Ghost Chasers, Jabberjaw, Clue Club, Speed Buggy, Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels, Jeannie, the Funky Phantom et al. Unfortunately, none of them were treated with enough respect to remain a part of American pop culture for good. Some of which you can see below. This is the 1st of my maligning theory i like to call...The Maligning!!

As the 80's loomed, toy manufacturers started coming up with very cutesy cuddly animals and toys to appeal to a whole new generation of kids that would sit along side the Star Wars stable of stars on the shelves. They include Monchhichi's, Cabbage Patch Kids, Pound Puppies and Strawberry Shortcake. Out of this came H-B's response to this issue which included such blah banality as...well, the Monchhichi's, Pound Puppies, Richie Rich, Paw Paws, and their most successful show for almost a decade, the Smurfs. Out of this was also born the "adorable" Flintstone Kids, Yo Yogi, A Pup Named Scooby Doo and Tom and Jerry Kids. This brings me to The Miligning #2 - i don't care if you make a show with the Flintstones as kids, i love the idea, but to design them to be so unrecognizable from its original appearance is a disservice to not only the characters but to the original designers and the fans who made the show popular to begin with. Why would a toddler Fred wear a tie? Why would Betty look like a fat idiot with a beehive hairdo? The original style from the 60's wasn't even a beehive! Below you see my version of what the Flintstone kids should have looked like. You can see more at http://slappy427.deviantart.com/

Now, in the 80's and 90's H-B did use their original most popular stars in various vehicles all very poor in storytelling and animation, but with loves comes acceptance, so i overlooked those aspects in order to have those guys on TV. Such shows as Yogi's Treasure Hunt, Fred and Barney Meet the Shmoo (and the Thing for some reason), the Real Adventures of Johnny Quest, probably their best update and the new episodes of the Jetsons, probably their worst update of all time! Orbitty anyone? But this is where the next malignment of characters began. The design, i suppose you could say, kept up with the times by rounding all the characters so much that they looked interchangeable. This is the era of Wilma's chin elongated so much, she could challenge Jay Leno to a chin off, Fred's overbite becoming an under bite, Barney's smock becoming more and more dark brown that in the Flintstones Christmas Carol, its almost black and the Jetsons being "animated" so on-model, most of the show is simply poses stolen directly from the model sheets themselves.

Thank the fates, this has come full circle as the Craig Kellman version of the Flintstones made it to print in The Flintstones: On the Rocks...a wonderful rendition of these characters. Also Yogi Bear's foray into reclaiming artistic glory via John K's view of the cartoons with his Yogi and Ranger Smith adaptations. Basically, and John K would agree with this, they evolved the look of the characters to a place so unappealing, that it took away their original appeal we all fell in love with thanks to the the designs of Ed Benedict, Dick Bickenback, Jerry Eisenberg, Iwao Takamoto and the rest.

Now, they are releasing The Man Called Flintstone on DVD, which is a great move, but did you see the possible cover art? it is at the top!

How is this piece of art, created decades ago to exist with the advent of VHS movies, supposed to appeal to the general shopper? If they were smart (and so far i have agreed with most of what they have done with the DVD releases) they will switch it up and have someone like Patrick Owsley do the cover. Or Craig Kellman, or any number of artists who would keep alive the look that is synonymous with the original material. Below is a sample of Craig Kellman Flintstone character designs.

P.S. While I'm on the topic...if you want H-B DVD's to sell, and you look at the sales of previous releases to make the decision on what to release or to release more at all...don't put out crap like Wait Til Your Father Gets Home. Way to put the nail in the coffin when we don't have on DVD much more popular fare such as Hair Bear Bunch, Quick Draw McGraw, Laff-a-Lympics, Peter Potamus and Jabberjaw!!!

Part II coming soon

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://hannabarberafanatics.blogspot.com/2008/08/stop-maligning-h-b-characters-part-1.html' title='Stop Maligning H-B Characters! The focus of the article was how he almost became a character not unlike Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Fred Flintstone, Popeye, Underdog and even SpongeBob Squarepants, or, famous toons that will live on and on and become equally as infamous to each generation of kids around the world. its a machine that is driven in 3 parts. one, because these are iconic, well developed (and in most cases anthropomorphic) personalities. two, because the creators constatnly change, evolve and make available to the masses these characters and three: it's like an out of control locomotive that can't be stopped. they are so ingrained in our society, because of parts one and two, that they will never go away.

4 Hanna Barbera characters, the remaining 4 i will talk about, almost made it to infamy right along side one of their company cohorts, Fred Flintstone, but were at some point, cut off at the knees just before finishing the race and never made it past the infamy finish line. about the only other character not from the Hanna Barbera stable to almost make it was Fang Face, a Ruby Spears creation that was very good, but a rip off of Scooby Doo.

Jabberjaw

Captain Caveman

Hong Kong Phooey

Dynomutt

i have a 4 tiered criteria that showcases why these certain characters should have made it from obscurity to infamy:

1. How much merchandise was created of them

2. How often were the characters used, outside of their own shows

3. Life size costumes created, you would find at an amusement park, is also an indication

4. 90's updates

Each of the 4 characters mentioned had merchandise created of them in various forms; coloring books, parachuters, stuffed animals. this was untrue of toons at the time who were not destined to be infamous...Devlin, the Houndcats, Giligan's Planet, The Groovy Ghoulies

Each character had life outside their own show:

All characters were members of various teams on the All Star Laff-A-Lympics. actually Jabber guested as a ref but who's counting? (i guess i am...duh!) but he was a cast member in Yogi's Space Race which was Wacky Races with spaceships. his partner was the even more obscrure, Buford the dog. the Captain apeared in man a flinstone reincarnation all the way up to the Flintstone Kids and most recently when Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm got married in the 90's and Dynomutt has had a long and storied history with Scooby Doo

You do not see costumes, amusement park costumes, made unless the character is popular. Each of these characters have their own costume, or at least did when King's Island used the HB stable as its roaming character crew.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5222233829625984754" style="FLOAT: left; i would take a Flintstone, Yogi, or Magilla over that boring mystery solving dog any day. i did have to watch it a lot, however, as i was the youngest kid in the house and "was made" to watch what my brother wanted to watch on Saturday morning, which happened to be the older-skewing Mystery Inc. gang. My favorite episodes were the ones with Scooby Dumm, with his battlecry, "Dumm-dumm-dum-duuuuuummmm!" Seems like many of the characters at Hanna Barbera had a catch phrase or battlecry of some sort but this show outpaced them all. besides the mantra of Scooby Dumm, Scrappy warbled, "Puppy Power", Shaggy yelped, "Zoinks" Velma hailed "Jinkies" and of course the top dog had his own, "Scooby Dooby DOOOOOOO!!!!" This formula, that became very popular in 1969, obviously had to spawn copies of its successful format; right down to the signature send-offs by the main character. The other mainstay is what i like to call the "Shaggy Effect" and "Fred Syndrome." Let's look at a few shall we?

Goober & the Ghostchasers. This one is funny because they didn't even bother trying to differentiate this spooky mystery solving group from the Scooby gang, and put the "ghost" in the friggin title! In this show, a nameless, faceless ghostbusters like outfit, would send the group of teens to hunt ghosts and get a story for a magazine. Goober's trademark...whenever he got scared, her dissapeared. this was great for the animator's who, already in "limited animation" mode, didn't have to animate this blue/green dog during the best bits of the show. (for more on limited animation, type it into google and find out) For some unknown reason, i really like this dog Goober. Yes, the stories are second rate, but the Dog, the disappearing dog with the funny laugh...him i like. Catchphrase: "That's Ridiculiculiculiculous!" Shaggy Effect: Gilly the photographer takes the Shaggy role but is way less endearing and completely unmemorable. Fred Syndrome: The bulky brave Ted. TED, people...TED...it friggin rhymes with FRED!!!

Jabberjaw. Another favorite of mine. this show incorporated not only the mystery solving aspect, the cumbersome pet aspect, AND the futuristic aspect, but also, they were a band! And the shark? played the drums. Really, that's enough said. Catchphrase: "No respect, no respect!" Shaggy Effect: Clamhead...i think he even caught a scared Jabber once or twice like the indelable image of Shaggy holding Scooby in his arms, knees a quakin!. Fred Syndrome: Biff - good looking, stocky and BLAND!!

Clue Club: Crime solving team in a small town. Only this time, they have two dogs, Woofer and Whimper. They also take all their jobs from an 8 year old girl named Dotty. She's not old enough to go with the team of teens, but is old enough to man the police blotter and happens to be a tech whiz. Woofer and Whimper's look smacks of Jerry Eisenberg and are actually endearing; so much so they had their own adventures alone during the Skatebids show. Catchphrase: Was there one on this show? Shaggy Effect: D.D. was this freaky looking, Charles Nelson Reilly like bafoon. Fred Syndrome: Larry. Oh dear larry, your short fro was something to be desired. There really is nothing to say here except he must have been cloned from Fred and slapped with a short jeri-curl.

the last one i will touch on..

Speed Buggy. Okay, so here is another beloved character of mine, but really, i guess H-B would stop at nothing to get a show on the air. Here we have a talking car. hey, guess what, its scared most of the time, weird huh? his pal is a lanky red headed fellow named Tinker who happens to sound exactly like Gomer Pyle, for those of you who remember him from Mayberry. Catchphrase: "Va-ROOM-A-ZOOM-ZOOM" or something like that. Shaggy Effect: Obviously Tinker. Fred Syndrome: Mark was the hunka hunka burnin love here. P.S. after Daphne, and Betty Rubble, Debbie here was my third crush!

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060512244394600354" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; The compelling thing about it, though, was the 45 second clip of Fred as an animated puppet. that sequence (pix below) made my heart pitter patter.

The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show:

This show is probably the only Flintstone spin-off worth its salt. First off, the voice cast including Alan Reed is great, but more than anything, the character design is ecactly inspired by the 60's version of the show and the two shows meld very well together. Sure, the animation lacks somthing to be desired, and the stories are subpar, but it is very close in look and feel to the actual show.

Help! But one dog in particular has flirted with the notion of being forever ingrained in our memory, only, it seems he never quite rose to the occasion. i am refering to, of course, Muttley. you can see the pictures of Muttley throughout this article and no doubt feel as though you have seen him before, and you're right, you have. Only its what you have heard from him that is instantly recognizable. This dubious dog is the owner of that great weez-laden laugh with a hint of a whistle. Muttley would bust this laugh out whenever someone, be it his owner, friend or enemy, had something horrible happen to him. This dog, and his laugh, had a beginning not unlike his predesessors, but is storied and peculiar, just the same. I think of the lineage of these characters more as a related family of brothers and cousins rather than one character who went through inevitable evolutions. Think the Snoopy family...Spike and all the rest of snoopy's brothers are variations on ol' Snoop. that is how i view the Muttley clan.

This captivating K-9 started his illustrious career as Mugger, the pooch with a penchant for pouncing on his trainers arm in the 1964 movie, "Hey There, it's Yogi Bear." Mugger was owned by the traveling circus bad guys who were hauling Cindy Bear away. Mugger was basically what Muttley became, but his coat was periwinkle blue and snout a sea green. He had a bigger muzzle and an amazing set of choppers, much bigger and more vicious than Muttley ever showed. Unfortunately, i do not have a picture of Mugger; i could not find one on the internet if you can believe that.

Precious Pupp, the next "relative" in this family tree, was born for the Atom Ant portion of the "Atom Ant / Secret Squirrel Show", which brought many new character additions to H-B's stable in 1967. This dog, although not looking much like Muttley, acted like and sounded exactly like him. He did have that kind of mangy, flea-bitten, shifty eyed look, but was much taller and gangly, with a tuft of orange hair on top. you can see him in this picture below; the best picture i found came from a spanish site, hence the funky name. In 1968, the "Wacky Races" program began and of course, it needing a nefarious ne'er do-well, tapped what we currently know as Muttley and, also, they created Dick Dastardly as his master. by 1969 H-B knew these were the breakout characters of the show and spun them off into their own show "Dastardly and Muttley in their Flying Machines." I should mention that the original D&M for this series look completely different than the stars from Wacky Races. Dastardly was this portly balding fellow while Muttley was more of a tall, short haired retriever of sorts. Not sure if they were going to be the revamped looks for the characters or what, but the concept art is clear that the "Flying Machines" show was going to have a very different set of stars...you can see the concept art below. At any rate, this spin-off solidified their place in H-B lore as the go-to villains for a lot of upcoming projects for years to come and merchandising was beginning to come out with these charactes. This show also squared up Muttley's character profile, giving him abilities and a more fleshed out manner that would become his signature stylings, such as the spinning tail that allowed him to fly.

Suddenly the 70's were upon us and Muttley had taken almost a 10 year break Only to return to our TV screens as Mumbly, a light blue dectective in an orange trenchcoat with the distinctive laugh. Undoubtedly supposed to emulate Columbo and his "mumbling" way of speaking, this dog, now a crime fighter who still seemed to have a shady snarky mean streak, was surly and reignited the Muttley legacy.

Mumbly's Dick Dastardly counterpart / update (you knew it had to happen) showed up in "Laff-A-Lympics" as Dread Baron, and both of them showed up in various other toons through the years most notably in "Yogi's Treasure Hunt."

Another more distant "relative", was Sludge. Really this character with his master Phantom Phink is only worth mentioning because for the first time in a long time, H-B decided not to use Dick and Mutt for their primary recurring villains in the "Yogi's Space Race" cartoon of 1978. this is really more of a footnote, so take it as you wish.

In the 90's when the Warner Bros. Studio Store was around, the classic and the most famous incarnation of Muttley with flight goggles and aeronautical scarf showed up in many forms; stuffed animal, embroidered shirts, keychains, Beanie toy. it seemed as though he finally made it into the big time with the pièce de résistance being a 2 foot statue that i believe was referred to as a "floor decoration." they made one of Scooby Doo too; those were the only two made, and at the time Scooby was really becoming immortalized for the new generation. Do you get what i am saying? the 2 characters made into these very rare and weird collectibles were Scooby Doo and...MUTTLEY?!?!?!? Not Huck Hound or Dino, or Yogi, or Fred Flintstone...MUTTLEY!!!

At any rate, Muttley Continues to be that fringe cult classic character that people have some sort of reccolection of and has skimmed the line between obscurity and infamy for many years and is still waiting for complete recognition. he is also waiting for someone to decide if he is green, or mustard colored.

Hey look, here he is as a costumed character!!! sure sign of infamy huh?

More Costumes

Here are some more awesome costumed finds...

Above is a little seen Magilla Gorilla cosutme that toured around "Hanna Barbera Land" in the now defunct Australia's Wonderland...a counterpart to the ever popular but now renamed Canada's Wonderland.

I have mentioned a couple of times how on the brink of huge popularity some of the 70's H-B characters were; here are 2 that were SO on the verge they got costumes made of them. Sure, cartoon team-ups were old hat and expected; they were like peanut butter and jelly, double stuff and oreos or Dolly Parton and boobs...you just expected one with the other. THIS, however, was like the best wet daydream, that lasted 22 minutes every saturday morning and involed every beloved cartoon character in the stable of the most successul television cartoon house the world had known at that point. This Olympics take off, which was known by about 3 different titled incarnations usually utilizing Scooby, H-B's most popular character at the time, was utterly and undeniably the one of the most ambitious, horribly animated, but unbelievably pleasing shows i have ever seen. In 1977, did i see Micky Mouse shot-putting against Jiminy Cricket, or Goofy in a 50 yard dash against Cruella daVille? How about Mighty Mouse curling against Heckle and Jeckle or Bullwinkle fencing Dudley Do Right? Hell no! But there i was, legs going numb as i sat Indian style in front of a 24 inch TV on Saturday morning, Fruit Loops fermenting in my belly, salivating at the site of my favorite characters interacting with each other while putting on their version of a network phenomenon; I suppose it would be called Battle of the Network Cartoon Stars. I was basically Nocturnally emitting during this morning eye candy that sent my mind into a frenzy. In one episode you could see Quick Draw Mcgaw, Mumbly and Captain Caveman in a unicycle race around the pyramids of Egypt, Super Snooper, Hong Kong Phooey and Dread Baron on a river raft race down the Mississippi and Cindy Bear, Taffy and Daisy Mayhem hang gliding over the Thames, all while the inimitable team of Snagglepuss and Mildew Wolf made like Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford, a-la the Wide World of Sports.

The combinations were endless and easily melded the 60's and 70's characters into 3 teams. the Yogi Yahooey's obviously headed by that smarter than average bear and consisting of just about every 60's animal character you can think of and 1 from the 70's...the Great Grape Ape. Omitted characters who would have been helpful: Squiddly Diddly, Secret Squirrel, Peter Potamus, Magilla Gorilla. The second team was called the Scooby Doobies. This was managed by Scooby Doo and Shaggy while housing most of the 70's human characters and thier anthropomorphic friends like the Teen Angels and Captain Caveman, Dynomutt and Blue Falcon, Hong Kong Phooey, Speed Buggy and Tinker and Babu from Jeannie and Scooby Dum. Omitted characters who would have been helpful: Goober, Jabberjaw (who made guest apearances) Woofer and Whimper, Penelope Pitstop, Undercover Elephant and either the Hair Bear Bunch or the CB Bears...surly this team was lacking some bears. Finally the Really Rottons was lead by none other than Mumbly. Mumbly was originally known as Mugger in the movie "Hey there its Yogi Bear", then was resurected for Wacky Races and teamed with Dick Dastardly in that and their own spin off show and known as Muttley, then recolored baby blue and outfitted into an orange trench coat in his own show and renamed Mumbly, all the while keeping his trademark snicker (that made its way onto the character Precious Pupp in the 60's for some unknown reason). This team had Dick Dastardly's cousin Dread Baron as Mumbly's cohort and many characters that were made specifically for this show like Daisy Mayhem, Sooey Pig and Orful Octopuss; this excludes the Dalton Boys who, in one form or another, were a part of many shows throughout H-B's show's of the 60's. Omitted characters who could have been helpful: Mr. and Mrs. J. Evil Scientist, Blast-Off Buzzard and Scat cat from the Skatebirds. As you can tell from the picture above, the cast was HUGE and that had to make animating a nightmare. As a matter of fact, i can only imagine that Joe and Bill accepted this pitch (unless it was his...does anyone know?) because he knew he wouldn't have to animate it. Needless to say i was smitten with the competition, the comraderie and the countless contests coupling copious commiserating cartoon characters, counted on to compete and captivate countless kids, kvetching on this confectionary, commercial-laden carnival. I think it is actually coming to video soon, as i have seen some possible artwork and info on the series. look for it and love it; its like loving the Superfriends...you don't know why but having all of those heroes together on the screen (even the made up, politically correct ethnic ones) was pleasing to the eye. Buy this when it comes out so we can keep the H-B DVD train rolling right along.

First Joe Barbera now Iwao Takamoto

i love a lot of what Iwao and Jerry Eisenberg did at Hanna Barbera. People can scoff all they want about how cheap the animation was and crappy the shows were, you CANNOT, however, dispute that the design of the characters were really beautiful. I mean come on...a bear with an afro? Stylistically, the shows worked and still hold cult status thanks to the unbelievable character design. the same can't be said for other studies' attempts to horn in on H-B's saturday morning territory, with Filmation coming close and Ruby-Spears a little closer in the 80's, as they actually studied and worked for Hanna Barbera previously. Fine; the stories in Speed Buggy were stupid, insipid even...hell they were knock-offs of old unused Scooby Doo scripts with the names changed, but the LOOK of the series is what is still appealing about the shows. i get excited when i see these characters and even more excited when i see current artists renditions of these classics. further more, i believe that with great stories and greater, maybe even CG animation, any one of those cartoons would be hits today. the pic i posted is of the Hair Bear Bunch, one of my all time favorites. This show has actually stood the test of time and trust me i would not say that about much of what HB did, as much as i love them. The experimentation on color, design, Voice talent, camera angles, and story was one of the last great originally dealt with cartoons. Sure the title made no sense, and...well..ok it sucked ,(Help! It's the Hair Bear Bunch?!?!?!?) but it was masterfully designed and executed. BTW if you want to see amazing renditions of other peoples fantastic take on HB characters, go to deviantart.com and root around using Hanna Barbera as a key word. i have found some delicious HB treats of late.

Little Remembered Lippy Lion

I have a fondness for Lippy and Hardy too. oh, you don't recall those characters? most don't actually. at least not the people in my circle. Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har, a hungery lion and dour non-laughing hyena , respectivly, were a part of what was billed as the "The New Hanna Barbera Cartoon Series" At this time in 1962, H-B was enough of a known commodity that they could sell a show with their name on it so they did. the show consisted of the aformentioned anthropomorphic duo, plus Wally Gator and Touche Turtle and Dum Dum (is it "Dumm" with 2 "M's"??) in much of the pre publicity for the series, not only was Lippy seen differently than we know him now, (character designs of Lippy were leaked to some merchandisers before the official model was set, therefore you see the Lippy the Lion game with Lippy wearing a crown, a flintstone like tie and cuff links) but he was almost always sans Hardy. in the photo you see aboveon bottom, Hardy is nowhere to be seen. fine, for dear old Dum Dum, he was really only a second banana, But Hardy was billed on the title cards. no wonder he was never laughing, he was getting paid scale while Lippy was signing autographs and partying at the Sands in Las Vegas with the Rat Pack. from what i can tell, Hardy was also left out of merchandising. there is a Lippy Soaky, a shampoo bottle line popular in the 60's, and a lunch box with all the stars mentioned above but no Hardy. He did exact his revenge however, in the late 90's when the Warner Bros. Studio Store was selling Beanies of their characters. Hardy got a beanie and Lippy was left out. Very weird how these two have had seperate lives in merchandising over the years. Alas, they are finally together in a venture brought on by Funko, our friends who brought us bobble head toys of our favorite characters. as you can see above top, the titular twosome is together for the first time. good for them!

Cartoon Costumes

I'm obsessed! Something about my favorite characters transformed into a 3-Dimentional figure, always has had me obsessed. I think it started when i was a kid and watching the Brady Bunch when they visited King's Island, Greg borrows a costume to try and woo a girl...turns out he was wearing a Hair Bear Costume. HAIR BEAR?? a costume of HAIR BEAR? one of my all time favorite cartoon charactes? well this led me to seek out other Hanna-Barbera costume possibilities. i remember a few specials on TV that showed Yogi, Huck, Wally Gator, Hong Kong Phooey, Quick Draw McGraw, Jabberjaw and the Flintstones as life size costumes, but alas, i have never seen those shows again. i have some visual representation of them, sure, but what i wouldn't do to see those shows again in crystal clear DVD resolution...boy oh boy. every once in a while a grainy, poor quality clip shows up on the internet to wet my appetite; for instance the other day a clip of Scooby Doo's birthday celebration from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade showed up with many of the aforementioned characters on a float. you could barely make out who was there, but it broaght me back to that day when i was 10 and seeing it live oh so many years ago.

For years i lived with the knowledge that many of my favorite characters had costumes made of them, and that they were mostly centered around King's Island and its sister parks around the country. recently, however i have uncovered, thanks to fellow blogger Steven Thompson and his blog http://booksteveslibrary.blogspot.com/, that there were in fact costumes made up of 3 of my most favorite and obscure H-B characters in their library; Funky Phantom, Mildew Wolf and Lambsey. The latter 2 characters were a part of the Catanooga Cats show and Mildew, voiced to perfection by the inimitable Paul Lynde, was one of the 2 announcers on the Laff-A-Lympics show. Here's how they became a signature at King's Island. King's Island was just getting off the ground in Ohio and realized they wanted and needed a draw for children, just like Walt Disney used his characters to enhance his park. The shows that were running in the early 70's, when this park was fully realized, were as follows; Hair Bear Bunch, Funky Phantom, Scooby Doo, Gulliver's Travels, It's the Wolf, the Banana Splits and of course the always popular stars Yogi, Fred and Barney and Huck Hound were a mainstay. Using the popular characters of the time was simply the obvious choice for KI and therefore used those characters in their quest for costumed characters. The only pic i have ever seen and am befuddled i am just finding out about this, is the one on Steven Thompson's blog showing the characters who were around during that first year. Above you can see that Mildew is there in a very close up picture of his face - it took me a long time to figure out who it was, and then it donned on me that not only was it next to Lambsey, but that smirk and those eyes were unmistakenly Mildews. Next to him is a great shot of Lambsey. I wish i knew how to find more pics of those two costumes, as well as more on the Funky Phantom. i have one very blurry one, but it is so faded, it isn't appropriate for me to show. so here they are; some pics of costumed characters from King's Island.

I have also recently uncovered pics of costumes for Captain Caveman, and Dynomutt, not to mention the Hillbilly Bears which are more obscure characters for costumes...weird choices but King's needed some to go along with their Enchanted Voyage ride which was the H-B version of "It's A Small World" complete with moving animatronic characters such as Squiddly Diddly, Banana Splits, the Hillbilly Bears and Precious Pupp. If only i had a time machine to go back in time and see this place in its glory days.

McFarlane Toys

Did you hear the latest news coming from McFarlane Toys? Could Hanna Barbera have been more in tune with the pulse of the country? Any fad that was worth its salt, was made into a cartoon by H-B. The dune buggy craze of the mid 70'ss begat your favorite sputtering friend and mine, Speed Buggy, another Scooby Doo knock-off, but stylistically pleasing. Superheroes where big in the lat 70's, hence, Dynomutt and Blue Falcon, Captain Caveman (who was doubly fad-alicious with the Teen Angels, an obvious reference to Charlie's Angels) and Even Hong Kong Phooey, whose DVD set recently dropped. Remember that little movie that started a wave of space themed everything, Star Wars? from that came Yogi's Galaxy Goof-ups (above with Huck, Quack-Up and Scare Bear), Yogi's Space Race and an updated version of Space Ghost and the Herculoids who were now joined by two new teams - Teen Force and Astro and the Space Mutts. Of course none of this was new; Hanna-Barbera and even Warner Bros. back in the day, would use popular actors or live action characters to make a mint on television or in theatrical shorts. Does anyone remember the Honeymousers? obviously the Flintstones resembled in a huge way, the actual Honeymooners. Then there were the personalities of the many H-B stars such as Lippy the Lion, Hokey Wolf and Snagglepuss in example. Dare i even bring up the ridiculous toons of the 80's that were a waste of time? Rubik's the Amazing Cube, Pac-Man, Monchichi, Pound Puppies? those were lifless and when H-B really started going down hill.

One of My Favorite, but little known Characters

Jabberjaw. When i was growing up, this guy was on the verge of becoming as big as Scooby Doo. Yes, i know, it was simply a variation on the Scooby Doo genre created by Joe and Bill, (or some would say Ken Ruby and Joe Spears) but he was a wonderfully developed character with a great "Curly" from the Three Stooges attitude. As a mystery solving animal that played the drums in his band, the Neptues, Jabberjaw took up with his buddies in 1976, Biff, the Fred Jones strong man, Shelly, the persnickity hot chick with a really bad attitude, Bubbles, the...well...bubbleheaded one and theone and only Shaggy like guy, Clamhead. Jabs actually started showing up on merchandise and was the first H-B character to appear, not on a metal lunchbox, but those new fangled plastic ones. i really hope McFarlane plans to turn him into one of the amazing figures he is making of classic H-B characters, that would be a true testament to his cult popularity. here is a great pic of good old Jabby

Welcome to Hanna Barberaian

This is the place for all Hanna Barbera enthusiasts to share, discuss and revel in all things Hanna Barbera. in the coming weeks and months i hope to share my vast online collection of H-B related picturs, culled from 10 years on the web, and to discuss all manner of characters and shows. check back often and ask questions any time.

G
